Fishing in Prince Rupert

FISHING IN PRINCE RUPERT

Nels, Kayl, Steve and I arrived in Prince Rupert, BC on July 4th for 2 days of fishing. The weather was nice and we are all pumped. Kayl had never been ocean fishing, so she was quite excited and we were excited for her. She has fished the lakes with her Dad ..and out fished him. We are meeting our friend and captain Jim Lancaster at 5:45am. Click on the photos to see them larger.

The table is set. Let the fishing begin

This is Jim, our captain and friend. "He who scoops the fish out of the water and cleans the fish and drives the boat and changes the lures."

The crab traps will be dropped in the morning and picked up on our way in at the end of the day.

This is approximately where we will drop the crab traps

Metlakatla Village community, located 5 km north of Prince Rupert. Metlakatla means 'saltwater pass' in Sm'algyaxx, the language of the Coast Ts'msyen (Tsimshian).

I got a bite after about 30 mins of letting the line out

I got the 1st Coho and the largest that day. The little guts on the floor was actually a 'fry' (baby fish) that the Coho was eating when I caught him. This was the only time in 2 days I had bragging rights. After this, I caught a few coho but ..I never did catch a halibut. I resumed my roll as ''the one who takes photos'

AND SHE'S OFF
Kayl gets the 2nd Coho. This is the 1st Coho she has ever caught. Wow. Let the fishing begin! She is pumped. After this, everyone is catching fish left right and center. But who will catch the 1st Halibut? It was not me.

Nor was it Steve

Nor was it Nels

And the winner is...KAYL. Kayl caught the 1st Halibut! AND.. the biggest Halibut of the day! This was her 1st Halibut catch. The maximum length we could legally take was 101cm and hers was 99. What a catch! The rest of the Halibut that were caught were quite a bit smaller. We soon learned that Kayl out fished us all, including her Dad. Quite the fisher person she was.

Then everyone was catching Halibut..except me

It was an awesome day fishing. The weather was great. I don't recall how many fish we caught but we caught some Rockfish as well. Small bottom fish. Bug eyed they are, but excellent for fish and chips.

We saw some whales, sea lions, eagles, cormorants, seagulls, turns, and other fishing boats

But wait...there's more..we are heading back in but we need to pick up the crab traps. Kayl is a trooper and offers to pull them up from the depths ..hard work. Its good to be the oldest on the boat, no one is going to ask you to pull them up especially when you have to hang onto the wall to pull your pants up or put your boots on.

These are the coolers, both full of fresh fish/crab on the way to Dollys to be processed.

The following photo was day 2. It was freaking cold, windy, raining and I was in no mood for fishing. It wasn't even a good photo day. I was wearing 2 pairs of sweatpants, t shirt, long sleeve shirt, sweat shirt, rain jacket and a floater jacket with 2 hoodies on my head, a pair of socks and running shoes.

After 2 days, this is the total catch that we had Dolly process.

This was the end of a great fishing trip. Tales being told.

yes, that is an eagle..a very big one!
